Spring is here!

Filed under: General Update — Andy @ 8:54 pm

like the first flower blooming, the first chicken hatching, and the smell of freshly cut grass, ku has once again rock chalk choked away another tournament to signify the wonderful beginning of spring.

Can’t you hear the crack of the bat (or clank of the rim)?

i realize a team loaded with nba talent that once again failed to live up to their seeding by managing to go 14 of 33 on dunks and layups is odd, but around here we just call it the chokehawk equinox.

sorry ku fans

Filed under: General Update — Andy @ 3:21 am

the tournament run ends today because i went ahead and made the dumbest sports bet i’ve made yet which was $100 on ku to win.  this guarantees ku will lose because i’m generally unlucky and deserve to lose this money for being so hasty.

least you all can take heart in knowing for 2 short hours i’ll be a big jayhawk fan, so, let me be the first to say rock chalk jayhawk go ku!

Choice to make

Filed under: Job — Andy @ 2:32 pm

Now that I’ve been laid off for who knows how long, I have a decision.

Choice the 1st:

Wait until I get offered a borrow-out (maybe a month or 2) and go wherever they send me for who knows how long (at least 4-6 months and possibly longer) and make a good sum of money in the process.

  • Pros: some time off, then make a boatload of money (borrow-outs pay very well)
  • Cons: Stuck in the middle of nowhere with no friends (unless I get sent to Avondale, LA, near Ryan which is a possibility) and no certainty as to when I will come back to KC.

Choice the 2nd:

Get a part-time job now and refuse a borrow-out.  work part-time until I can hold a position in Kansas City again.

  • Pros: Stay home, no temporary moving.
  • Cons: giving up a lot of money.

Essentially It comes down to money.  I do have a car loan that I want to pay off quickly, but its not essential.  If i take the borrow-out, i can save faster for when I buy my townhome in KC.

I dunno what to do.

I might go ahead and apply for some part-time work and see if anyone hires me, that might force my hand.   My lean is for the part-time thing.

Monday I will be laid off.

In other news my final 4 is Fla, ku, UNC, and Tex A&m with UNC beating Fla 79-75.

How much would you pay for a particular outcome?

K-State and ku play again tomorrow in basketball and since I like to bet on sports I had to figure out how much I would put on kansas to win.  Ku is a 6-1 favorite to win outright (meaning you bet $6 to win $1) which equates to about an 86% chance to win.

I went ahead and put $30 on kansas to win $5 in hopes that really I’d be happy either way.  K-State wins, I get to enjoy that (rare) feat, and it cost me $30.  ku wins and I win $5 (and keep my original $30).

So….could i go even more?  Up to $50?  At what point am I pissed K-State wins?  Tough call.  Right now its $30, i might go to $40 but not sure yet.  K-State has SOME chance, but not much, probably 10%, which makes the $30 bet good.

These are the things degenerates have to contemplate on a regular basis.

Greatest Movie of All Time Released Today

Filed under: Movies — Andy @ 2:39 pm

Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci star in Paramount Classics' Black Snake Moan

Synopsis: A half-naked young white woman is chained to a radiator by a black man who is determined to cure her of nymphomania.

Genius.

That half-naked young white woman is played by my absolute favorite actress, Christina Ricci.

On top of all of that Samuel L. Jackson is playing the role he was probably born to play and with Justin Timberlake thrown in to boot, its pure Cinema Magic.

There is no doubt in my mind that my top 10 all time movies list will look something like this after tonight’s viewing:

1. Black Snake Moan

2. Black Snake Moan

3. Black Snake Moan

4. Citizen Kane

5. Black Snake Moan

6. Black Snake Moan

7. The Big Lebowski

8. Black Snake Moan

9. JFK

10. Black Snake Moan

First Union Meeting

Filed under: Car, Job — Andy @ 10:21 pm

currently listening to: Decemberists-Castaways and Cutouts Castaways and Cutouts

tonight i attended my first union meeting.  in case you didn’t know, i’m a member of the united transportation union which represents trainmen working for union pacific.  (website for the local 1403 i’m in)  A lot of it was about what to do if i get hurt on the job-which is basically don’t cooperate with the company, go through the union.  Makes sense.

Now, as most of you know I’ve been a lifelong conservative republican and generally labor unions tend to send a good amount of money to democrats because they have a history of fighting for labor instead of company interests.  Personally, I don’t really vote on those issues when i step into the voting booth.  I pretty much only vote on tax issues/reducing the government issues.  So, I am not at any odds with the unions or its politics; i’m really all for unions. i think they serve a great purpose protecting workers from the occasional abusive company.

other random news-my car just turned over 10,000 miles.  pretty quick turnarount there since i’ve only had the car about 4 1/2 months.  but 60 mile round trips to work 6 days a week will do that.  plus numerous trips to lawrence and manhattan on top of that.
