careful crossing bridges in lawrence…

During the judging for KU’s steel bridge, the infrastructure collapsed….Clay said that last year the KU team was disqualified for a similar problem….(least they are consistent in what they teach)

The KU team of about 20 engineering students has been preparing since September (?), when they started designing the structure. Joe Pattison, Overland Park junior, said the team looked at what other successful teams had done to create its own original design.  (apparently not closely enough)

Pattison, a first-year member, said he was impressed with Kansas State University’s assembly. (because it worked?)

“K-State looked like they didn’t even use nuts and bolts,” Pattison said. “Everything just clicked into place. It only took them about six minutes.”  (K-Staters treated this like an elementary school project)

LOL there are so many awesome levels to this article i dont know where to begin.  well, one would be don’t hire any ku CIVIL engineers to build stuff for you (especially over K-State ones) ahahahahahaha!

Jacob’s Well

currently watching: X-Files-Season 1

k well other good news going on…found a new church home in mid-town kansas city near wesport.  Its called Jacob’s Well.  i’ve been looking for a new church for at least 6 months since the pastor at my parent’s church retired.  also, my parents church was just that…my parents church.  Its where they were drawn when they were my age.  Its where i grew up, but as an adult i haven’t felt at home.  there wasn’t really a whole lot for people my age either.

so why this one?  well, i’d guess the people who attend are at least 2-1 ages 20-35.  the music is modern.  the messages are biblically based but also very relevent to everyday life.  It feels intiment, it feels like a community, it inspires me.  I actually want to come and its hard to leave and I look forward to the next week.  I want to get involved.  I haven’t really felt that.  So this is very exciting for me.  Hopefully I can meet a lot of neat people there too.

New Bowling Record

Filed under: Bowling — Andy @ 2:17 pm

i said i’d update some good things that happened recently and the last score on that sheet is my best by over 30 pins.  it was a nuts game for me, 9 strikes and 2 10-pin spares.  the last 3 games on the sheet made up the best series i’ve had, 591.

I think i’m gonna join a league this summer, I haven’t been in one since last spring at K-State.  I’m starting to feel better about where my game is, I know what to look for when i struggle.

patience

i think my life is some kind of lame homage to patience.  like i’m patiently waiting, as a 26 yr old, the chance to move out and own my own place, have (and hold) a good job, and some kind of wifey-dealy.   most people my age have all that and more.  certainly keeps everything fresh and interesting i guess, i can honestly say that each and every day i have absolutely no idea what will happen.  i’m continually surprised.  it also definitely helps having complete trust that God will take care of my every move so i dont worry really.

uh other things…i had a nice trip to oklahoma this weekend, my cousin Matt and his wife are good hosts-i always have a good time there playing golf and games.  i just realized that i think i’ve driven a different car down there every year he’s been there, and thats gotta be at least 4 or 5 years.  on my way down i noticed at least an inch of snow everywhere in kansas…man its a good thing theres global warming, or else we might have had sub-zero temps and a foot of snow in the middle of april.

job is starting out well, and by that i mean i dont hate it yet.  its gonna be tough working 30-32 hours/week at a job that pays less than half of what i made at the railroad (which of course is the reason why i’m dealing with the above patience thing…)

ok tomorrow i’m going to update some good things that have been going on.

College basketball update

in light of the whirlwind of activity this week around Kansas State basketball, i give you this commentary I wrote on thursday on a messageboard:

While it was assured K-state would be the first to recieve the worst ever coaching screw-job in college sports history, i think i’m finally getting really disgusted with what college sports has become.  I’ll always love K-State, but what we are competing with out there, well, I’m not sure we will ever be dirty enough to compete properly.

When i see schools like usc, ohio st, texas, and michigan on tv i just see greasy, big money, semi-pro farm clubs rather than universities.  And when I see huggins and a lot of other heavy hitters moving around each year, it just shows its all about $$$ and selfishness.  There is no love for the game or the schools or even the players.  Its getting harder to watch everyday.

—————————————————–

i was upset, but i realized its just the nature of the business.  i did, however, have a feeling it would all turn out ok.  I love the Martin hire, I think it was the only move that could have been made.  the 4 players kstate signed for next year are a part of whats been called the #1 class in America and I think KSU needed to find a way to keep that in tact.  Its not like Martin is completely unqualified, he’s certainly proven he can recruit with the best of them.  Its also been said he runs practice and if you watched him on the sidelines he was as fiery as huggs and directed players on the court too.   He certainly had plenty of success at the highest level in the Florida highschool system.  He also is a better guy in general than huggs (not that that would be difficult).

I for one will be keeping my season tickets and be enjoying next year with even more enthusiasm than this past season.

first day

Filed under: Job — Andy @ 8:26 pm

man tonight i ordered a happy meal at mcdonalds and they asked if i wanted a girl or boy toy and i clearly said boy cause it was a TMNT and i got a girl toy instead.  it was a wizard of oz wicked witch doll.  is that the most relevant thing they could come up with for girls?  isn’t there anything slightly more recent, like say within the last 60 years they could give away?

man i’m glad i’m not a girl.

anyway, first day at cap fed was better than i thought.  spent first 3 hours filling out paperwork at the main office then i went to the branch i’ll likely work the most at which is in the target in olathe.  when i get there there is 3 girls working there.  of course i promptly found out their ages and it was 19, 19, and 20.  i knew i found the right job.

lol j/k actually they were all really nice and i should enjoy working with them.  i think all the dudes that work there took the day off for the royals game.  should meet more of my co-workers tomorrow-it is wierd being so much older than everyone there, and kinda sad.  but its better than who i worked with at the RR (mostly  brash 50+ yr old men).

k well cap-fed offered me the part-time floater job and i start tomorrow at 8:30am.  for 2 weeks i’ll have a “normal” 8:30-4pm M-F schedule while i’m in training.   then my odd floater schedule will start.

in other news i’m happy cause i’ve been meeting a lot of neat and interesting people lately.  I hope that keeps up.  i’m also attending a new church in mid-town KC.  I think it could be a winner.
