Kutztown University (the real KU) and ukans’ stolen trajan font logo

we’ve already documented how ukans had to find a “more professional” logo and they spent $90k to a consulting firm to find one.  well..they did find one, the same one Kutztown University had developed 2 years earlier (for only $20k…lol at ukans getting ripped off).  First thing i notice is of course, Kutztown at least understands how to make a proper acrynym of their university name and is the real “KU”.  The university of kansas, apparently not wanting to play second fiddle yet again to the University of Kentucky (UK) went with the nonsensical “ku”.  2nd thing i notice is how much better the trajan font logo looks in red and gold.

i dont know how this story slipped me by back in 2005.

oh and lol at this quote:

a senior at Kutztown University contacted by telephone Thursday. “What do I care?” he asked. “It’s so far away.” He said he wasn’t even that familiar with kansas university.  “I have heard of it. Your colors are, I guess, purple and white?” he said.

whats also funny is apparently Kutztown wanted to challenge ukans to a football game to decide who keeps the logo.  i think ukans knew they would have had their hands full and promptly declined.

  1. 1. The logos are incredibly different. Not sure what you are looking at.

    2. If you would have read the article you quoted you would have seen that since 1979 Kansas University has owned the federal registered trademark for the letters “KU” for any higher-education uses. Anyone you talk to knows who you are talking about.

    3. KU hasn’t played second fiddle to UK in how many years?

    4. Mr. Biery, you make a sad man out of me. I spend probably just as much time looking up stupid crap as you. And for what, just to argue with you, a guy who so irrationally believes this kind of stuff actually makes a difference in quality of sports programs. I am lame.

  2. I would also like to add that it is so sad that logos are that expensive. I guess that puts the whole economic crisis into perspetive, eh? ;)

  3. 1.not sure what you are looking at. and i’m not alone, there was a big hulabaloo about this if you search the ljworld archieves.

2.i’m not saying noone knows that ukans uses ku, i’m just saying its stupid.

3.kentucky 7 ncaa titles, 4 major ncaa infractions. kansas 3 ncaa titles, 5 major ncaa infractions

    4. good i win

logos are only expensive if you dont have anyone creative enough to design them within your own school.

the only economic crisis we are facing is the potential election of obama and thus the furtherance of liberalism which of course got us into this fannymae BS.

  4. I’m the first to admit, I’m not a huge fan of the way hundreds of thousands of dollars get spent by the KU head honchos (parking survey and logo redesign were my pet peeves), who then turn around and ask me to pay more in student fees because they can’t afford to do building maintenance (!), but these days, sadly, higher education is a business first and foremost, and to the victor go the spoils, you have to spend money to make money, bada bing bada bang, the cash is gone quick and you better hope your investment pays off because nobody believes a penny saved is a penny earned anymore. (I was trying to get at least three tired but useful idioms in there. Success!)

Nevertheless, for the sake of the KU vs. UK discussion, which I only barely care about and do not at all want to fight about, I bring this website to the table:

    http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/ukku.html

In short, as far as anyone can tell, nobody knows why we say KU and not UK, although there are plenty of media that do use “Kansas University”, whether right or wrong.

I just like that the article pointed out we aren’t alone in the silliness of picking a backwards abbreviation. Now I feel I have the freedom to say “hey, it’s just a mid-western thing. whatev.”

    :P

  5. Wow, the girlfriend got in on it. I’d really like to see you argue her points. That could lead to some very interesting blogging.

By the way, a person I work with said something interesting yesterday. He said that fans who have never tasted victory (ie: championship) can never know the passion of those who have. I’ve heard you say it before, how frustrated you are that all the teams you root for loose. Well, my friend, now I can truly say that what your blog is is “an ode to the lame.” Those that are passion-less. Those that have no idea what victory can be like. And, I can truly say that as a reader and fellow arguer, that I represent those whose passion cannot be quenched because they have tasted success…and it tasted GREAT. So, your little “I win” comment is fine with me because I know where you stand.

By the way, Abbie, are you a McCain/Palin fan? Or, are you going against the love of your life and rooting for Obama? I would really like to know because again, it could put a whole new spin on Mr. Biery’s blog.

  6. theres nothing to argue against with what Abbie said.

sounds like your co-worker is a moron. i see no coorelation to how much passion anyone has vs how high of a peak the team they root for has climbed. hell, if anything, the complete opposite makes a lot more sense. seriously re-read what you just wrote. what tends to drive people more…having never reached the top or reaching the top for the 3rd time?

Abbie is supposedly undecided. not that it matters much, Kansas is going McCain either way.
